Express Entry – All About New Category-Based Express Entry Draw
As a result of the increasing need for employers to fill job vacancies throughout Canada, immigration plays a crucial role in addressing this issue. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has implemented a significant update to Express Entry by introducing category-based draws. The new process is a big change for Express Entry and in the light of this development, here are quick facts and answers to questions that candidates may have about the new selection.
How does category-based Express Entry work?
All the current rules about the eligibility for express entry will still apply and candidates will still be required to meet the regular eligibility pass mark. Candidates will still need to have a valid express entry profile to be eligible for an Invitation to Apply (ITA). The newly added categories are designed to target candidates with specific skill sets which will enhance the prospects of receiving an ITA for permanent residence in Canada.
What are the categories?
For 2023, the categories that have been chosen are:
- French-language proficiency
- Healthcare occupations
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
- Trade occupations
- Transport occupations
- Agriculture and agri-food occupations
Who is eligible?
Among the five occupation specific categories listed above, all candidates must:
- have at least 6 months of continuous work experience (in Canada or abroad) within the past 3 years in a single occupation listed in the category
- meet all requirements in the instructions of that round
for French-language eligibility, you must:
- have French-language test results that show minimum score of 7 in all 4 language abilities on the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens
- meet all requirements in the instructions of that round
When will the targeted draws start?
The first category-based Express Entry draw is expected to take place this summer. More information will likely be made available in the next few weeks.
Will CRS still be a factor for Express Entry?
Yes, the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score will still count for Express Entry. Category-based rounds of invitations will rank candidates in the Express Entry pool who meet the category requirements and then invite top-ranking candidates to apply for permanent residence. This will give candidates a better chance as their CRS score will only be ranked with those in the selected category rather than the entire Express Entry pool.
What if my occupation is not listed in the new category?
All program draws will still continue to take place and if your occupation does not appear on the demand list, you can still be considered under the general draws.
