I can help you with:
who am I?
I am a passionate and long-serving non-profit and charities lawyer. I was called to the bar in 1987 and have for the majority of my professional life served the non-profit and charities sector. I have extensive experience through the lifecycles of non-profits and charities, from incorporation through charitable registration applications, governance best practices and issues, dispute resolution, meeting facilitation, risk management, records, privacy and information management, training and education, and related matters.
I have been involved in various community initiatives over the years, serving as a director with a wide variety of organizations, with a particular focus on mountain-related organizations. I began serving BC’s climbing and mountaineering community while a student at the University of British Columbia and remain actively engaged to this day. As a young volunteer, I led training trips and taught rock climbing at Squamish and elsewhere. I have continued this with the BC Mountaineering Club, with which I have been active for over 50 years. I introduced many people to rock climbing and mountaineering, and I have been a mentor to many climbers. In 1980, I wrote a guidebook to rock climbing at Squamish. As a founder and long-time president of the Climbers’ Access Society of BC, I was one of those instrumental in persuading the provincial government to create Stawamus Chief Provincial Park in 1995 and Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park in 2010. As founding member of the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival in 1997, I have been involved as a volunteer, director, and strategic adviser. I was also an early member of Mountain Equipment Co-operative. I started as a volunteer at its tiny first store, then served nine years as a director, including three years as chair.
I was appointed as a King’s Counsel designation in 2023, and awarded the BC Achievement Foundation Community Award in 2022.
